After 7 years, Google+ is shutting down.

The Close Of Google+, The Social Media Platform of Google

On Monday, Google announced it will be closing down Google+ for consumers. This announcements comes after years of declining usage. Google reported 90% of user sessions are under 5 seconds long.

In March of 2018 Google discovered and immediately patched a bug that allowed consumer data to be compromised. Data such as email, name, and birthday were available for accounts that were set to be private. This data breach is believed to have affected as many as 500,000 accounts.

Google decided not to announce the bug due to concerns about public response and possible regulatory restrictions. The same month, Mark Zuckerberg was testifying in congress about the Facebook Security breach.

It will take a full 10 months to shut Google+ down. Read Google’s full blog post and statement here.
